In Luke 8:40-56, Jesus heals a woman who can’t stop bleeding and raises a child from the dead. It’s a remarkable summary of what Christ came to do. In this account, Jesus ministers to a religious and social outcast (woman who can’t stop bleeding) as well as a prominent religious leader (Jairus, the synagogue leader, whose 12 year old daughter dies). Jesus doesn’t choose one over the other, but heals both. In both cases, Jesus makes it clear that faith is essential. But what is so unbelievable is the fact that Jesus will finally defeat sin, sickness, suffering and death in the future. What a joyful day that will be. If you’ve ever lost someone to death, you can imagine the sweetness of everlasting life. Isaiah 65:20 puts it this way, “No more shall there be in it an infant who lives but a few days, or an old man who does not fill out his days, for the young man shall die a hundred years old, and the sinner a hundred years old shall be accursed.”
This is what Easter means for the Christian. No more disease, suffering, death. Jesus will bring real peace. We are no longer enemies with God and there is no such thing as suffering in this future!
Happy Easter! Alleluia Christ is Risen! The Lord is risen indeed!
