Prayer #110: For the COVID-19 Virus Amidst the Summer Temperatures
During the colder months of late-winter and spring, as the COVID-19 virus ascended, hope was expressed on the part of physicians and health officials that the hot temperatures of summertime would significantly aid in the eradication of the virus. Some studies had shown that the virus deteriorates more quickly at warmer temperatures than at cooler temperatures. Earlier Coronaviruses that have long circulated in the population tend to peak in colder months and wane in the summer months.
The reasons, however, that cases of COVID-19 have continued to mount even in the heat of summer are, health authorities believe, threefold. The first is the current level of immunity in the country. The percentage of immunity is still believed to be low, since, due to the shutdowns and restrictions, exposure to the virus has heretofore been quite low. With a lower amount of immunity in the population, as reopening has occurred as well as street protests and public rallies, the number of cases would be expected to increase, which they have. The lack of a large base of immunity in the population dominates any possible temperature effect, health officials believe.
Secondly, the manner of transmission of the COVID-19 virus---through aerosols (very small droplets)---would indicate that probably, infection occurs often in poorly ventilated, indoor spaces, where warm temperatures are not a factor.
Finally, the virus tends to spread best during close-up, person-to-person interactions for extended periods, especially at crowded events, indoors or outdoors, where people are talking loudly, shouting, or singing, without masking and social distancing. Such conditions trump possible temperature effects.
As we have now moved into the summer, pray for God's protection from the COVID-19 virus. Pray that care would be taken through masking and social distancing to prevent infection. And, as more are possibly exposed to the virus, pray for God's protection through resistance and immunity. We remember today that God is sovereign over all things, including COVID-19.
Col. 1:17: "And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together."
