Prayer #123: For the Mutations of the COVID-19 Virus and the Development of a Vaccine
According to a very recent study, the COVID-19 virus is being mutated by human proteins, in what researchers believe is a defense mechanism to degrade the virus. The study, performed by the University of Bath and the University of Edinburgh in the U.K., examined over 15,000 virus genomes from research projects around the world and identified 6,000 mutations. There are four letters used to identify the genetic code of the virus: A, C, U, and G. In this investigation, scientists observed that the COVID-19 virus has a very high rate of mutations that generate U residues, forming UU pairs where before there were CU and UC couplings. This particular pattern of mutation is a signature, virologists say, of the mutational profile of Aplolipoprotein B mRN Editing Catalytic Polypeptide-like (APOBEC), a human protein that mutates viruses.
This has strong implications for the development of vaccines for the COVID-19 virus. Scientists conducting this study believe that increasing the U content in a vaccine would be the most sensible and potentially rewarding strategy.
Today, we pray for those performing research on the mutations of COVID-19. Pray that God would lead them to uncover important and valuable clues that will lead to the development of a highly effective and viable vaccine. Pray for God's wisdom in those that outline potential studies, for the necessary funding to be made available, and for rapid but careful investigations. Pray that virologists and other scientists involved in these studies would humbly seek the Lord for His leading and direction.
Ps: 25:9: "He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble His way."
