Prayer #131: For South Africa's Large Number of COVID-19 Cases
Just days ago, South Africa's number of COVID-19 cases surpassed 500,000, which accounts for 50% of all the reported cases in the continent of Africa and makes it fifth in the world in the number of reported cases, after the United States, Brazil, India, and Russia. South African health officials are warning that that nation has not yet reached its peak in the pandemic. However, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins researchers, there are only 8,005 confirmed deaths due to COVID-related causes, which makes it 17th in the heat rate among the nations of the world. A report released in late July by the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) indicated that there are significant discrepancies in the number of Coronavirus-related deaths and the number of "excess deaths" from natural causes. Perhaps, officials at SAMRC surmise, these excess deaths could be due to a possible lack of other illnesses going untreated as concentrated medical attention has been given to fighting COVID-19.
There is also considerable fear on the part of South African health authorities that even this large number of cases being reported is considerably short of the real number. "Half a million is a significant milestone," Denis Chopera, a virologist bases in Durban, "because it shows we've entered a stage of rapid increases. What we know for sure is that the figures are an underestimate and that this virus will be with us for a long time to come." The Gauteng province, where the capital city of Johannesburg is located, has 35% of the country's cases, which makes it the epicenter of the virus in South Africa.
Pray for the nation of South Africa as it deals with this large surge in COVID-19. Pray for adequate hospital facilities, oxygen, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPF), including masks, as these have all been in short supply. Pray that citizens would be able to take adequate precautions so that the increase in the Coronavirus could be halted. As with all countries, including and especially our own, pray for a great move of God in the midst of all of this pain and suffering.
Hab: 3:2: "O Lord, I have heard the report of you, and your work, O Lord, do I fear. In the midst of the years, revive it; in the midst of the years make it known; in wrath remember mercy."
