Prayer #140: For India During the Coronavirus Crisis
Days ago, as India passed the two million mark of COVID-19 cases and more than 41,000 deaths, about 900,000 community health workers, an all-female organization called the Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA), went on strike, stating they were ill-equipped to respond to a new wave of infections in the rural areas of that country.
India, the second-most populous country in the world, has the third-largest number of COVID-19 cases and the fifth-largest death rate from the virus. Like the United States, it has been in the process of relaxing the lockdown restrictions. In most of the cities of India, COVID case frequency has been decreasing, but in rural areas, they are seeing the opposite. There, the government has called on ASHA workers, above and beyond their normal duties which are non-related to COVID, to help with contact tracing, personal hygiene drives, and work in quarantine centers. The ASHA workers, however, are not getting additional pay for this, nor have they been given masks or personal protective equipment, the latter a source of great concern to them, and the main reason for their strike.
Pray for the country of India as it continues its battle with COVID-19. Pray that the rate of infections in the large cities would continue to decrease, even as restrictions are released. Pray as well that the rising rate of COVID cases would subside in the smaller towns and rural areas. Pray for the large body of ASHA workers as they have been called in to help in these latter regions of India. Pray that they would be issued the masks and personal protective equipment they need. Finally, remember to pray for God's work in this nation of over 1.3 billion people, where so many live in spiritual darkness.
Ps. 9:9: "The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.. "
