Prayer #157: For Teenagers Serving During the Coronavirus Crisis
As the Coronavirus crisis continues, there are some teenagers throughout the country that are seeking to do their part to help those in need. One of the things some of them are doing is delivering groceries to senior citizens who, at higher risk to the COVID-19 virus, are isolated more at home and reticent to go shopping. Teens Helping Seniors now has more than 650 volunteers across the nation doing this. The Coronavirus "has reignited the spirit of volunteering in our generation and within our community," said Dhruv Pai, a 16-year-old in Silver Spring, Maryland.
There are many teens making masks as well. Back in March, when the outbreak of COVID-19 was just beginning, 15-year-old Valerie Xu began to raise money to buy masks, when they were in short supply. She had relatives in China, where many of the masks were manufactured, and asked her mother, who speaks Mandarin, to make inquiries about some CDC-approved masks. She raised more than $23,000 to purchase 52,600 masks---surgical, FFP2, and 3-layer masks. These she has given to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, and to a homeless shelter there.
With the closure of schools, teens are also teaching online classes to younger children. In Cupertino, California, Nelson Mu, a 17-year-old high school student, began teaching classes online for elementary school children whose schools were shuttered. This has blossomed into a nationwide organization of teens called YAPA Kids, under which hundreds of teens throughout the country teach virtual courses on subjects ranging from math, science, art, and dance. "People want to make a positive change," Mu said in an interview. "That actually makes me extremely optimistic about the future."
We thank God for these teens and their servant-hearted actions in the middle of the COVID-19 crisis. Pray that God would continue to raise up more of these young people to make a difference during this pandemic. Pray too that their good works would spur others, older than them, to follow their excellent example.
Heb. 13:16: "Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God."
