Prayer #162: For AMTRAK During the Coronavirus Crisis
AMTRAK has just announced that it is furloughing over 2,000 of its workers as a result of the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The train transportation corporation's ridership and revenues are down 95% from the time before the outbreak of the virus. It currently employs about 20,000 people. In April, AMTRAK was given $1 billion in emergency funding by Congress.
AMTRAK is a government-owned company that operates with annual subsidies from the federal government. It has operated at a financial loss every year since its inception in 1971, and the present COVID-related economic impact may, it is feared by corporate executives, be the final blow that could lead to its demise. In the meantime, AMTRAK is reducing services, cutting most long-distance trains to 3 days a week instead of daily, and also offering buy-out packages to employees.
Pray for AMTRAK as it seeks to weather this severe economic storm. Pray for new jobs for those who are being furloughed. Pray for Congress as it continues to debate the amount and conditions of a possible second Coronavirus stimulus package that could bring relief to many individuals and businesses.
Ps. 94:19: "When the cares of my heart are many, Your consolations cheer my soul."
