Prayer #168: For Quicker Testing for COVID-19
The Wall Street Journal reported two days ago that COVID-19 diagnostic testing companies are seeking to develop tests for the virus that are quicker and more affordable, those that could be done at offices and nursing homes. They are also working on developing at-home tests, of which there are still none that are approved for use.
Regarding rapid COVID-19 tests, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has thus far authorized four antigen-based tests. And, Abbott Laboratories recently announced a test that costs $5 and the test kit is the size of a credit card. Although these more-rapid tests are not as precise, they are believed to be accurate enough, and public health officials believe that it is better for the control of the virus to have reasonably accurate tests that can be done quickly.
The majority of the highly-precise COVID-19 tests in the United States use the method called rt-PRC, which stands for Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction, a technique that searches for the virus's genetic material and amplifies it. These are extremely sensitive tests but are much more costly.
Rapid tests will best serve public health screening, while the precise ones are what is needed for diagnoses by physicians of patients exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms.
Pray for more rapid tests for COVID-19 to be developed and approved soon. And pray that these quicker tests would be greatly helpful in ensuring that there is a wider public health screening for the virus.
Ps. 16:8: "I have set the Lord always before me; because He is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken."
