Prayer #172: For Brazil During the COVID-19 Virus
Presently, Brazil, with a population of 209 million people, has the third-highest number of COVID-19 cases in the world, over 4 million, with approximately 127,000 deaths. Thankfully, it appears that the virus is currently on the decline, having peaked in late July.
The sizable drop in COVID cases, especially in some cities in Brazil, has some scientists rethinking what is required for the so-called "herd immunity"---the immunity of a population that develops when a certain percentage of people develop the antibodies for immunity to the disease, which in turn eliminates its continued spread. There has been considerable discussion about what this minimum percentage is; many infectious disease scientists believe it is 60-70%; some others say it is as low as 40%.
The case of one place in Brazil, the impoverished city of Manaus, with a population of 2 million, has been of much interest concerning herd immunity. COVID-19 deaths plummeted from about 120 per day in May to zero in August, with hospitalizations greatly reduced. Testing for the virus is up from what it was earlier. This city never imposed a lockdown or took the other drastic measures imposed in many other places. Manaus did not exceed 20% COVID cases in its population, as best as they can tell.
This may be in line with what some researchers have found in studying the COVID-19 data from European cities, which has led them to the conclusion that herd immunity can be reached for the virus at rates lower than 20%. Many cities around the globe that were once devastated by the virus never had a second wave after reopening, which has given rise to speculation that herd immunity was achieved.
Pray that the COVID-19 cases in Brazil would continue to decrease. Pray too that as cities like Manaus are studied, there a better understanding of at what point herd immunity develops in a population. Pray for a great rise in immunity to the Coronavirus worldwide.
