Prayer #183: For Asymptomatic COVID-19 Infections
Since early on in the outbreak of COVID-19, it has been thought that as high as 50% of those infected with the virus remain asymptomatic throughout the duration of their infection. A new study, however, states that as many as four in five will go on to exhibit symptoms, even if they don't at first. In this investigation, done by researchers at the University of Bern in Switzerland and published in PLOS Medicine, 79 previous studies of people with asymptomatic COVID-19 infections were examined. The Bern researchers noted that the studies which have been done are flawed in that only one asymptomatic data point was obtained. "Studies that assess people at just one-time point will overestimate the proportion of true asymptomatic infection because those who go on to develop COVID-19 symptoms will be wrongly classified as asymptomatic rather than presymptomatic," the Bern researchers stated. As a result of their analysis, the Bern researchers indicate that the data does not support that a large fraction of people infected with COVID-19 is asymptomatic, as heretofore thought. Rather, they believe that the proportion of people who are asymptomatic throughout the infection period is about 20%.
Pray for additional study on this subject of asymptomatic COVID-19 infections, so that a more accurate estimate of the fraction of people who have the virus but are asymptomatic can be made. The accuracy of this number is important for applying the best methods to prevent transmission of the disease. Pray for more follow-up of those exhibiting no symptoms while infected with COVID-19.
Ps. 6:2: "Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am languishing; heal me, O Lord, for my bones are troubled."
