Prayer #241: For COVID-19 Immunity Through T-Cells
According to a recent study published in the journal Nature, the presence of T-cells (T-lymphocytes) in some people due to prior exposure to other types of Coronaviruses in the past may possibly trigger the recognition of COVID-19 and thus enable the immune system to "remember" how to protect the body against the disease and fight infection. The study was performed by a team of researchers in Singapore, and in this study, they found that t-cells from SARS-CoV-2 (the Coronavirus that causes COVID-19) were present in all the patients they examined that recovered from COVID-19. They also found that 100% of patients that were infected with the earlier Coronavirus SARS-CoV-1 retained T-cells from this virus 17 years later. These patients, the investigators stated, displayed cross-immunity to SARS-CoV-2. The outbreak in SARS-CoV-1 occurred in 2003. The Singapore study also found that 50% of patients that were not infected with COVID-19 exhibited the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 t-cells. This may be due, the researchers stated, to a possible immunity that could come from the t-cells present from exposure to earlier, more benign Coronaviruses that, for example, lead to common colds. It remains unclear whether the presence of pre-existing t-cells is sufficient for protection from COVID-19, or to alter its pathogenesis. The Singapore team is now embarking on a larger-scale study of exposed but uninfected patients in an effort to shed further light on this.
Pray for this team of researchers in Singapore as they conduct this important study. There are 19 total investigators in this study. Pray for God to lead them as they embark on this study, and for God's wisdom in carrying the investigation out and interpreting the results. If you would like to pray for these researchers by first name, they are Nina, Anthony, Kamini, Christine, Morteza, Adeline, Melissa, Meiyin, Nicole, Martin, Wan, Mark, Lin-Fa, Eng, Shirin, Paul, Jenny, Yee-Joo, and Antonio.
