Prayer #260: For COVID-19 and Substance Abuse
A new study conducted by researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center of Public Health that during the COVID-19-related lockdowns, more Americans have turned to alcohol and drugs in greater numbers than ever as a way to cope with stress related to the pandemic. More than 2,000 people were interviewed in the study, which was conducted in the first month of the COVID lockdowns in the spring. Many, the study found, were drinking or taking drugs because of the loss of work or the fear of losing their job. Marriage and family tensions, exacerbated for some because of the lengthier time at home, also were a major contributor to the increase in substance abuse. Some parents are suffering emotionally because their children are out of school and are anxious and depressed. Many experts in the social field fear that the effects of more people turning to drugs and alcohol will exact a costly toll, both at home and in the workplace, for some time to come.
Pray for Americans that have turned to alcohol and drugs during the COVID pandemic. Pray that they could find the support and help they need. Pray especially that those who are dealing with fear, anger, despair, and other emotional reactions to COVD and the resulting restrictions, would turn to Christ, the only source of true peace.
Jn. 14:27: "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give it to you."
