Prayer #266: For the Development of a New Oral Drug That Blocks COVID-19 Transmission
Researchers at the Institute for Biomedical Sciences at Georgia State University just recently announced, through a publication in Nature Microbiology, the development of a new anti-viral drug, MK-4482/EIDD-2801, or Molnupiravir, which dramatically and completely eliminates virus transmission within 24 hours of ingesting it. The drug is potent against influenza drugs. "This is the first demonstration of an orally available drug to rapidly block SARS-Cov-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) transmission," Dr. Richard Plemper, lead investigator of the research team, stated. It could, he said, be a "game-changer."
Since Molnupiravir can be taken by mouth, treatment can be started early and there is a potential three-fold benefit. First, it can inhibit the aggressive progress of the disease in patients; secondly, it can considerably shorten the infection phase and thus reduce the time of patient isolation; and thirdly, it can quickly combat local outbreaks. The research has thus far been done using ferrets; the next step would be trials with human beings.
Pray for the continued development and testing of this potentially important drug, certainly for COVID-19 and for other influenzas as well. Pray for care and wisdom on the part of the Plemper team at Georgia State University, and as well, for other confirmatory teams. Pray that God would lead them in their further research concerning this drug. Let's indeed pray that this drug could play a major role in the elimination of COVID-19.
Job 12:13: "With God are wisdom and might; He has counsel and understanding."
