Prayer #267: For The Netherlands During Its 5-Week Lockdown Due to COVID-19
The Netherlands is the latest European country to enter into a strict lockdown due to a COVID-19 surge. Cases of the virus had remained low relative to much of the world all through the spring and summer, but in the fall there was a major surge, which peaked on October 30th with new cases for that day being 11,119. Right after that, there was a big decline, down to daily numbers of between about 5,000 and 6,000 new cases daily in mid-to-late November, which was a very hopeful sign. The number of new cases quickly rose again in December, however. Daily cases for yesterday, 11,169, were the highest ever in the Netherlands. As a result, as of December 15, the nation began a very strict 5-week lockdown. During this time, households should have no more than two visitors over the age of 13 (three will be allowed for three days surrounding Christmas). Citizens are being advised to stay home, not to travel to work, and to avoid contact with people as much as possible. All public places, including restaurants, bars, gyms, daycare centers, hairdressers, barbers, salons, cinemas, zoos, and museums, will be closed until January 19th. Schools must switch to remote learning. Groceries, gas stations, and pharmacies are virtually the only retail businesses that will remain open. Worship centers are not mentioned in the lockdown, but they are presumably closed as well. One of the most secular countries in mainland Europe, the Netherlands has seen a great spiritual decline, with only 1% or less of its people attending church.
Pray for the Netherlands during this five-week severe lockdown due to a large surge in COVID-19. Pray for many, especially the most vulnerable and high-risk citizens, to be able to get vaccinated soon. Pray for the virus to subside significantly during these five weeks. Pray especially for the great spiritual need of this nation, which was once strong in Christianity, that the moribund Church could awaken to life once again. Pray that during this crisis, many might turn to God.
Ps. 25:6: "Remember Your mercy, O LORD, and Your steadfast love, for they have been from of old."
