Prayer #269: For the Rise in School Absenteeism During COVID
Education experts are concerned about the possible long-term consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic due to chronic absenteeism on the part of students. A recent survey conducted by CBS's 60 Minutes indicated that in the 78 largest school districts in the nation, at least 240,000 students remain unaccounted for when school resumed remotely this fall. According to this study, this absenteeism is continuing to rise, putting millions of children and youth at risk of seriously falling behind. The reasons, for this absenteeism, are varied. For some students, there are Internet or technical issues. Some high school students are having to work due to the negative economic impacts of COVID-19. Perhaps most disturbing of all, children and youth who are homeless are experiencing the most severe impact of all the students in the midst of this pandemic. With the closure of school buildings and the loss of subsidized lunches, homeless students have lost the stability, safety, and nutrition that school had been providing. In January, the Department of Education reported 1.5 million homeless students. More than 423,000 of these have fallen off the school system radars since the onset of the pandemic, according to a survey by SchoolHouse Connection.
Let's lift up the public school systems across our country, and in particular, the many students who are now chronically absent. Pray that these can be found and reconnected. Pray for those students whose families are hurting economically and in other ways during the COVID-19 pandemic. Pray that the COVID-19 outbreak would soon come to an end so that schools can open their buildings.
Ps. 6:4: "Turn, O LORD, deliver my life; save me for the sake of Your steadfast love."
