Prayer #297: For Los Angeles Public Schools
The superintendent of Los Angeles public schools, Austin Beutner, announced earlier this week that students will not be allowed back to in-person classrooms until they have been vaccinated for COVID-19. This requirement, he said, is similar to that required for measles or mumps. It is, he said, "the best way we know to keep all on a campus safe." It may be some time, however, before a vaccine is available to the students. The two FDA-approved vaccines now in use were tested almost exclusively for adults. Very few teens and no children were tested. Children and teens will in all likelihood be the last to be vaccinated because they are at the lowest risk to contract COVID-19. Beutner is hopeful that all Los Angeles students will be vaccinated "by this time next year."
Pray for the children and teens in our public and private schools across the country. Other school systems may possibly follow the Los Angeles school system's lead and require that a student be vaccinated before coming back to in-person learning. Pray that they will be able to be vaccinated much quicker than anticipated since their absence from in-person classrooms has been shown to be very deleterious to their learning and emotional health.
Ps. 89:13: "You have a mighty arm; strong is Your hand, high Your right hand."
