Prayer #301: For the United States as COVID-Related Deaths Top 400,000

Just over a month ago, there were 300,000 deaths in the United States attributed to COVID-19. Now, as of Tuesday, there are 400,000. "One in every 820 people in our country have died during this pandemic, often alone, typically away from family and friends, comforted only by physicians and nurses in layers of PPE.," said Susan R. Bailey, president of the American Medical Association. Rochelle Walensky, the incoming director of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), stated this past Sunday that the nation is likely to see "dark weeks ahead," with the country's Coronavirius death toll expected to top 500,000 by mid-February. The CDC also said that the new strain of COVID-19 is liable to take hold in the U.S. in March. Right now, there have only been about 90 cases of this new COVID mutation spread out over 14 states, but this variant, which is believed to be more contagious, is projected to multiply fast. Thankfully, it is believed that this strain is not resistant to the COVID-19 vaccines. The CDC emphasized the need for a careful observance to measures to help in preventing the spread of the virus; frequent hand-washing, wearing of masks, and social distancing. Thus far, about 12.2 million people have received the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, and there are 31 million more doses that have been delivered to states. Presently, the U.S. is fourth in the world in COVID-related deaths per 100,000 people, behind Italy, Czechia, and the United Kingdom.

Pray for our nation over the coming weeks as the new COVID-19 variant is projected to multiply and the race for vaccination continues. Pray for quick and effective but careful vaccine production and delivery. Pray that those who are at the highest risk but have not been vaccinated would soon be able to get the vaccine. Pray that all those who have received their first dose would be able to get the necessary second dose when it is due. Pray that the vaccines would indeed be effective against this new COVID-19 mutation.

Ps. 91:1-2: "He who dwells in the shadow of the Most High, who abides in the shadow of the Almighty, will say to the LORD, 'My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."
