Prayer #306: For Germany, As It Extends its COVID-19 Lockdown
Germany recently decided to extend its national COVID-19 lockdown in view of the risks posed by the emergence of the new variant of the virus. Chancellor Angela Merkel and the country's sixteen governors made the decision to extend the lockdown, which was due to expire at the end of the month, for two more weeks, until February 14. Overall, the progress in fighting the virus in Germany has been encouraging as of late. This past Thursday, 20,398 new cases were reported, down nearly 5,000 from nearly a week before. The number of new cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 people was 119, the lowest this has been since the beginning of November, though this is still much higher than the 50 that the government is targeting.
Though the new COVID-19 variant has been found in Germany, it has not yet become a dominant factor. But, Chancellor Merkel said, Germany "must take the danger from this mutation very seriously. We must slow the spread of this mutation as far as possible, and that means we must not wait until the danger is more tangible here. Then it would be too late to prevent a third wave of the pandemic, and possibly an even heavier one than before. We can still prevent this."
Pray for Germany as it seeks to prevent the spiking in COVID-19 that occurred in the United Kingdom, where the new variant of the virus first appeared. Pray for
God to give wisdom to Chancellor Merkel, the nation's governors, and its health officials as they make further decisions on lockdowns or re-openings. Pray that this new COVID-19 mutation would not spread there and become a major force in the escalation of the virus.
Ps. 62:8: "Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us."
