Daily Prayer During the Coronavirus Crisis

Prayer #314: For Mexico's High Mortality Rate from COVID-19

Presently, Mexico is the country in the world with the highest mortality rate from COVID-19. At 8.8% deaths per case of the virus, this is by far the highest rate of any of the 20 countries most seriously affected by COVID (the next highest is Peru at 3.6%; the U.S. is currently at 1.7%). There are probably a number of reasons why Mexico's mortality rate is so high. First, and perhaps foremost, Mexico has a very low COVID-19 testing as a percentage of the population. The country has performed about 28,000 tests per 1 million residents, a figure that is very low compared to most other countries. Also, in Mexico, there is a higher prevalence of hypertension and diabetes, two conditions that can lead to severe complications with COVID. Many in Mexico who become ill with the virus do not, or are not able to, seek timely medical care. Masking and social distancing have not been enforced as strictly as in other countries.

Pray for the country of Mexico, as proportionally many more people are dying from COVID-19 than other countries. Pray that its citizens would follow COVID protection steps carefully. Pray that testing would greatly increase---that more facilities would become available for free testing, and that more people would be aware of the symptoms of COVID-19 and the need for testing. Pray that those who are ill would be able to seek medical care and would be able to do so.

Ps. 72:12-13: "For He delivers the needy when he calls, the poor and him who who has no helper. He has pity on the week and the needy, and saves the life of the needy."
