Prayer #320: For the Continued Decrease in the Number of New COVID-19 Cases in the United States—Now Under 100,000
The number of daily new cases of COVID-19 in the United States has continued to drop, decreasing virtually every day since January 8th. Yesterday, for the first time since November 5th, the number of daily new cases in the country dipped just below 100,000. New cases, COVID-related hospitalizations, and deaths from the virus all dropped last week. The number of people presently hospitalized with the virus is 81,439, down more than 40,00 from the peak in early January. As of yesterday, more than 26,796,705 people in the U.S. have been infected by the virus and at least 454,134 have died from it in this country, since the beginning of the pandemic.
Though the decrease of new COVID cases is extremely heartening, it should be nonetheless borne in mind that we are still at a very high rate of daily new cases here in the United States. By comparison, the peak of new cases in the April surge was 34,699, and the peak in the summer surge was 73,525.
Though the continued decrease in new COVID cases is indeed heartening, it should be nonetheless borne in mind that the present level of new cases is still considerably higher than the peaks back in the spring and summer. The highest daily number of cases in the spring was 34,699, and the highest in the summer was 73,525. At the present rate of decrease, it could be 1-2 months before new case levels will be brought to summertime levels, and months longer for the virus to go away completely. Some health officials are wondering, however, if the new case levels will start to rise again due to the continued multiplication of the new COVID-19 mutations, which are more readily transmissible, and the slower rate of vaccinations.
Pray that new cases of COVID-19 would continue to decrease as we move from winter into spring. Pray that the pace of vaccinations will increase and would negate any possible new surge due to the increase of cases from the more contagious COVID-19 variants now in the United States. Pray above all that hospitalizations from COVID would keep decreasing as more high-risk people are vaccinated.
