Prayer #338: For the Continued Ascent of the B.1.1.7 COVID-19 Variant in the United States
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) stated today that the COVID-19 variant, B.1.1.7, first identified early this winter in the United Kingdom, is now accounting for about 10% of the COVID cases in the United States. Just a few weeks ago, this mutation of the virus was only present in 1-4% of the COVID-19 cases. This variant, believed to be at least 50% more contagious than the original form of the virus, will, the CDC believes, become the dominant form of COVID-19 by the middle of March. Just in the last week or so, the steady trend of decreases of new COVID cases, hospitalizations, and deaths has begun slowly to increase, something the CDC is calling a "concerning shift in trajectory." While is it believed that the current vaccines will protect against this and other new variants, vaccine manufacturers are working on booster vaccines that specifically target the new variants.
Pray that the present vaccinations would indeed protect against the B.1.1.7 and other COVID-19 variants. Pray that vaccinations would be able to be done at as fast a pace that is feasibly and safely possible and that the vaccinations would head off this new, still small, increase in COVID cases, hospitalizations and deaths.
Ps. 64:10: "Let the righteous rejoice in the LORD, and take refuge in Him."
