Prayer #349: For a Possible COVID-19 Treatment Pill Molnupiravir, Now in Trial Tests
The large pharmaceutical company Merck, in partnership with Ridgeback Biotherapeutics, has developed a very promising pill for treating COVID-19. The drug, Molnupiravir, has performed very well in the initial test trials, in which COVID patients all saw a major reduction in symptoms compared to the placebos given. Dr. William Fischer, the lead investigator of the trials and associate professor of medicine in the division of pulmonary diseases and critical care medicine at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, stated yesterday in a press release that the findings of this test, "a quicker decrease in infectious virus among individuals with early COVID-19 treated with Molnupiravir, are promising and if supported by additional studies, could have important public health implications, particularly as the SARS-CoV-2 virus continues to spread and evolve globally." Dr. Marc Siegel, a professor of medicine at New York University's Langone Medical Center, speaks very positively about Molnupiravir, which, he said, "was just studied in phase two trials and literally stopped the virus in its tracks. And there wasn't any virus found in the patients that were studied." If successfully approved for use, the pill would function as an at-home, five-day treatment, similar to Tamiflu, to stop the virus from multiplying before causing major damage. Siegel believes that it could be on the market as early as 4-5 months.
Pray for wisdom, care, and discernment for those conducting the future trials of Molnupiravir. Pray that this might indeed become a very effective and safe treatment for COVID-19.
Ps. 34:18: "The LORD is near to the brokenhearted, and saves the crushed in spirit."
