Prayer #37: For Rural and Small Town Hospitals ad Medical Clinics That Are Closing During the Coronavirus Crisis
It may seem counter-intuitive to most of us, but there are many hospitals and medical clinics that are closing during this COVID-19 crisis. These are medical facilities, especially in rural areas and in small towns, that are not located in areas of Coronavirus hot spots. Most of the images and reporting that we see are related to the overruling of hospitals in cities with higher COVID-19 outbreaks, but conversely, there are facilities for medical care in many places that are closing because of a lack of patients. Due to fears of contracting the virus, patients are reticent to go to a hospital or clinic. Physicians in non-COVID-19 hot spots are reporting a reduction of 60-75% from the normal number of patients. There is grave concern that empty hospitals and doctor's offices may lead soon to massive closures of these facilities. The Academy of Family Physicians recently estimated that half of the 58,000 family physicians in the U.S. could close their practices, putting hundreds of thousands of nurses and staff out of work. In addition, because of the Coronavirus, elective surgeries have been included in the restrictions, with the result that many specialist physician offices have been or will be closing, either temporarily or permanently. Perhaps even more seriously, people that should be receiving ongoing medical attention---those with heart conditions, lung issues, and chronic medical problems---are not now receiving the care they should be getting.
This day we pray for hospitals, medical clinics, doctor's offices, and other medical facilities, especially in rural regions and small towns where there have been little COVID-19 cases. Pray for these facilities, critical to these areas of the country, to be sustained through this crisis. Pray for relief financially for them. Pray for God to protect this important medical infrastructure in localities outside our major cities. Pray also for those who are in ongoing need of critical medical care to get the attention they need.
Jer. 32:17: "Ah, Lord God, it is Thou who hast made the heavens and the earth by Thy great power and by Thy outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for Thee."
