Prayer #388: For Increased COVID-19 in the Island of St. Vincent Following a Volcano Eruption
The Caribbean island of St. Vincent is experiencing a major volcanic eruption that has led to a government-ordered mass evacuation of about 20% of the island's population. Between 16,000 and 20,000 people have been removed from the island following the eruption of the La Soufrière volcano which started April 8 and is expected to continue for weeks. With water systems shut down in many parts of the island, low food supplies, and the potential extended interruption of the fishing and agriculture industries, there is a rising humanitarian crisis at St. Vincent. On top of this, health officials are very concerned about a possible COVID-19 outbreak, as thousands fleeing the volcano are crowding into shelters and houses. More than 4,000 people are now staying in 89 government shelters, and approximately 6,000 in homes, a number that is quickly growing. Heretofore, there has been very little COVID in the Caribbean island, and no official vaccination rates have been reported. But with these new crowded, indoor conditions, there is concern that COVID will spread. About a dozen new cases have been identified in recent days, in people living in a government shelter and a crowded house.
Pray for St. Vincent during this disastrous time. Pray for God's mercy to watch over the tens of thousands that are in great need right now. Pray too that COVID-19 would not spread, on top of all the other things that these islanders are now facing.
Ps. 120:1: "In my distress I cry to the LORD, that He may answer me."
