Prayer #391: For Vaccination for COVID-19 in Africa
Of all the continents, Africa is by far the one that is lagging behind the most in COVID-19 vaccinations. Less than 2% of the vaccinations globally have occurred in Africa, which, with a total continental population of 1.22 billion people, has 15.6% of the world's population. Only a few African countries---such as Ghana, Rwanda, and Senegal---have reached even 2% of their population fully vaccinated; many are less than 0.5% completely vaccinated. The problems with an effective COVID vaccine rollout in Africa are three-fold. First, there is a shortage of supply. Overall, there have been far fewer vaccines available in Africa than in other places. Secondly, there are many logistical problems. The lack of efficient management of vaccinations has led to long delays and failure to distribute them adequately to where they are most needed, which, along with the lack of vaccination priority for those most in need, have greatly hampered Africa's vaccination efforts. Finally, there are concerns about vaccine side effects, particularly with the AstraZeneca vaccine, the most available vaccine in Africa, from which there have been rare cases of severe and even fatal blood-clotting. This has sparked considerable debate over its use in Africa. Meanwhile, perhaps primarily due to the COVID-19 variant that was originally identified in South Africa and is now found in 17 other African countries, COVID is considerably rising in a number of places in Africa, including Angola, Burundi, Egypt, Ethiopia, Gabon, Kenya, Libya, Madagascar, Mali, Somalia, and Tunisia.
Pray for the continent of Africa as it greatly struggles in its vaccination efforts. Pray for breakthroughs soon in the supply and availability of the vaccines, and for the distribution and application of them throughout Africa.
Is. 12:2: "Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust and will not be afraid; for the LORD God is my strength and my song, and He has become my salvation"
