Prayer #396: For the Reinstatement of the Johnson and Johnson Vaccine for Use in COVID-19 Vaccination
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), after a review and the recommendation of a panel of experts that the Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccine met the required safety standards, lifted an 11-day pause on the use of the vaccine, despite rare instances of severe blood clots (thrombosis with thrombocytopenia, or TTS) seen in some receiving the vaccine. The panel recommended that language be included that advised the public of a risk of blood clots upon receiving the vaccine, which is delivered in a single dose. "We have concluded that the known and potential benefits of the Janssen [Johnson and Johnson] COVID-19 Vaccine outweigh its known and potential risks in individuals 18 years of age and older," Janet Woodcock, acting FDA Commissioner, said in a press statement. "We are confident that this vaccine continues to meet our standards for safety, effectiveness, and quality." The FDA and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have identified 15 cases of severe blood clots among the nearly 8 million people who have received the vaccine, all of which occurred in women between ages 18 and 59. Three of the women died, and seven remained hospitalized. "At this time, the available data suggest that the chance of TTS occurring is very low, but the FDA and CDC will remain vigilant in continuing to investigate this risk," the two federal agencies said in a joint statement. The rollout of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine was re-started in Europe as well after drug regulators there came to the same conclusion.
We want to thank God for, and continue to pray for, good progress in vaccination in the United States. Presently, 28.5% of the U.S. population is fully vaccinated, compared to 3.0% worldwide. About 36.5% of adults 18 years and older are fully vaccinated.
