Prayer #400: For the Importance of the Second COVID-19 Vaccine Dose
Yesterday, a study on the importance of the second shot of the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccines, conducted by researchers at Cornell University, was published in the New England Journal of Medicine. In the study, 1,000 adults were asked in February about the vaccines. About 20% of the respondents indicated that they thought that one dose of the two-dose vaccines was needed to provide strong protection against COVID-19; 36% said that they were unsure that one dose would provide the protection needed; and less than half indicated that they believed that the full two-dose regimen gave the necessary protection, one to two weeks after the second dose. One of the study's leads investigators, Dr. Jill Goldfarb of Cornell's Department of Biological and Environmental Engineering, expressed concern about the lack of information being given to vaccine recipients after she herself received her first dose at a county-run site. The failure to convey information about the timing and importance of the second dose could, she said, "end up prolonging the pandemic because people don't follow through." The researchers of the study stated: "Many Americans, including many of those who have already received a first vaccine dose, remain confused about the timing of protection and the necessity of a second dose." Since February, there has been more emphasis on communicating the importance of the second dose. Still, according to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) about 8% of the people who received the first dose have skipped the second one. Health officials are concerned that the failure to get this second shot on the part of a fraction of those vaccinated once could prolong the pandemic.
Presently, about 43.5% of the U.S. population have been vaccinated one time. Many of these have been vaccinated with either the Pfizer or the Moderna tw0-dose vaccine. Pray that all who have received the first shot will be aware that a second shot is needed. Pray that those giving the vaccines would communicate this with those they are vaccinating, and would schedule this second shot right at the time of the first vaccination. Pray that these second-shot appointments would be kept and that the pandemic would not be prolonged in the U.S. due to a lack of second vaccine shots.
