Prayer #404: For Possible Approval of the Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine in India
Albert Bourla, the CEO of Pfizer, announced today that talks are underway with the Indian government that may result in the fast-tracking of the process of approval for Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine. The availability of this vaccine would be a major assist to India, which is in the midst of a devastating runaway outbreak of the virus. "Pfizer is aware that access to vaccines is critical to ending this pandemic," Bourla said in a statement. "Unfortunately, our vaccine is not registered in India although our application was submitted months ago. We are currently discussing with the Indian government an expedited approval pathway to make our Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine available for use in the country." India currently has COVID-19 infections in excess of 20 million, and daily new cases of the virus have just recently exceeded 400,000. In addition to these conversations with the government of India, Pfizer is donating over $70 million of medicines to India's public hospitals for patients battling COVID. These medicines treat inflammation, blood clotting, and secondary bacterial infections.
Pray that there could be quick approval of the Pfizer vaccine for COVID, already in widespread use in the U.S., in India. Only about 2% of India's 1.4 million population have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19, and vaccines are in extremely short supply. Pray that the availability of the Pfizer vaccine will help turn the dire situation in India around.
