Prayer #410: For the Possible Ultimate Eradication of COVID-19
There are various scientific opinions concerning the long-term prognosis of the COVID-19 virus. Some believe that it will continue to be around at a low level, kept in check through vaccination, more like the conventional flu. Others, such as Hugh Pennington, an emeritus professor of bacteriology in the United Kingdom, are of the opinion that it may very well be fully eradicated. With the aggressive roll-out of COVID vaccination in the U.K., new COVID cases, hospitalizations, and deaths from the virus have been dramatically reduced there, similar to the U.S. "By this next winter," Pennington said, "COVID could be about the same problem as an average flu season, and we can cope with it as we cope with flu. I think we will see COVID off in the U.K. In fact, COVID vaccines are more effective than flu vaccines, so flu may even turn out to be more of a problem in the future. We may not even need booster jabs in the autumn. Let's wait and see." Regarding the emergence of COVID-19 variants, Pennington is optimistic. "I have always been skeptical about the extent of the threat from the importation of variants," he said. "Sometimes it's been about blaming the variants for other failures in the system. You cannot predict a pandemic---only be ready for them. COVID-19 may turn out like SARS and just die out."
As we consider the longer horizon, let's indeed pray that COVID-19 does die out completely. Continue to pray for vaccination efforts all across the world.
Ps. 115:1: "Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to Thy name give glory, for the sake of Thy steadfast love and faithfulness. '"
