Prayer #63: For U.S. Farms During the Coronavirus Crisis
Though farms across the nation have not had to shut down during the COVID-19 outbreak, they nevertheless have been greatly impacted by it. This is because a large amount of food raised on farms---about 50%---goes to restaurants, hotels, schools, work cafeterias, and other institutional users. Since these have either been shut down or severely restricted during this time, the demand for vegetables, fruit, and meat has gone way down, putting farmers in a financial bind. So, even though there have been significant shortages of some items---meat for example---the income of the farmers producing these things has been considerably reduced. This situation has also had untoward effects due to an excess of food produced. Perishable things such as milk have had to be dumped as they spoiled. One farmer in Idaho had a giant mound of 500,000 potatoes that he was giving away free to the public, because of a total lack of restaurant buyers, just one of a myriad number of examples of this.
We do want to pray for our country's farmers, the mainstay of our food production, not just for our nation, but many other countries around the world. Pray that the demand for their agricultural goods would quickly return as restaurants and other large-scale users of food open up. Pray that God would restore the farms' large financial losses. We thank God for farmers, who labor hard to provide the food we need to live.
Deut. 28:12: "The Lord will open to you His good treasury the heavens, to give the rain of your land in its season and to bless the work of your hands."
