The book of Ruth is a powerful story of God’s mercy in the midst of seemingly hopeless times and great suffering. Naomi, the mother-in-law of Ruth, upon returning to Bethlehem after losing her husband and 2 sons in the land of Moab described her life as being bitter saying, “call me Mara, for the Almighty, has dealt very bitterly with me. I went away full, and the Lord has brought me back empty.” She believed God was against her and that she had no hope and no future. Yet, amazingly, God was working, and little did Naomi know the great blessing Ruth would be to her. Bethlehem called a house of bread, would one day be the birthplace of the Bread of Life, Jesus Christ. The book of Ruth ends with Ruth giving birth to Obed, who becomes the grandfather of King David. From the line of Obed would come to the Messiah. Just when all seemed hopeless God displays His love for Naomi and Ruth in providing a husband for Ruth and they have a part in God’s redemptive plan to show God’s covenant promises to His people.
