Call to Worship
The Mighty One, God the LORD, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting. - Psalm 50:1
From the rising of the sun to its setting, the name of the LORD is to be praised! The LORD is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens! Who is like the LORD our God, who is seated on high, who looks far down on the heavens and the earth? - Psalm 113:3-6
I am the LORD, and there is no other, besides me there is no God; I equip you, though you do not know me, that people may know, from the rising of the sun and from the west, that there is none besides me; I am the LORD, and there is no other. - Isaiah 45:5-6
Prayer of Adoration (praising God for who he is and what he has done through Christ in the world and in our own lives)
Confession of Faith
"Let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead. This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” adapted from Acts 4:10-12
Confession of Sin & Assurance of Pardon
For as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous. Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. - Romans 5:19-21
Prayer (confess sin, ask forgiveness, rejoice in Christ’s finished work on our behalf)
Yet Not I, But Through Christ in Me (scroll down for lyrics and music)
Scripture Reading and discussion and/or reflection
1 Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; 2 but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. 4 The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. 5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; 6 for the LORD knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
Questions for discussion and reflection
- What do you notice in this passage? What is God doing? What do humans do?
- Does God have a solution for the wicked?
- Does God have a solution for the righteous?
- Do you delight in the ” law of Lord” (v. 2)? What are some barriers to your delight?
- How can you be encouraged (and encourage others) with this passage?
Prayer Pray and ask God to help you this week to delight in his law and not to delight in sin.
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. 2 Corinthians 13:14
